Background of the study:
Traditional midwives have historically played a critical role in maternal healthcare in Epe Local Government Area. Rooted in indigenous knowledge and experiential practices, these practitioners provided culturally sensitive care and support to women during pregnancy and childbirth (Balogun, 2023). In recent decades, however, modern healthcare systems have expanded, bringing advanced medical technologies and practices to the forefront of maternal care (Adeniran, 2024). Despite these advancements, traditional midwives remain a vital resource for many women who prefer culturally aligned practices and personalized care. Their methods, often passed down through generations, emphasize holistic care and the incorporation of natural remedies (Olu, 2025). This study examines the evolving role of traditional midwives within the framework of modern maternal healthcare. It investigates how traditional practices are integrated with contemporary medical approaches and the implications for maternal health outcomes. Furthermore, the research considers community perceptions, regulatory challenges, and the potential for collaboration between traditional and modern healthcare providers to improve service delivery (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
Modern maternal healthcare systems in Epe have increasingly overshadowed the practices of traditional midwives, leading to a decline in their utilization and recognition. This shift raises concerns about the loss of culturally significant practices and the potential negative impacts on maternal care, particularly for communities that rely on traditional methods. The study seeks to address the gap by examining the challenges faced by traditional midwives and exploring ways to integrate their expertise into modern healthcare frameworks (Adeniyi, 2023).
